Relocating Squirrels?

Updated: Apr 30

Let's face it,

they are amazing little creatures but we don't want them living in our attic

and waking us up at 4:30 in the morning, do we?

So what do you do?

Well, first and foremost, buy a squirrel house on Amazon,

make sure it has at least 2 holes in it,

they need an emergency exit in case of predators visiting them.

While you're there, get some unshelled hazel and/or walnuts,

more on that later...

Next up is timing.

I wouldn't do it in the winter, spring or fall,

as winter is hard to adjust to and spring and fall is mating season.

So, summer time it is.

I would do it early morning, human morning, around 8/9.

That way they have a whole day to find

and manage their new home.

Wear a pair of gloves and take everything they have

and put it inside the squirrel box, find a big old tree near by,

with thick bark for easy climbing, put it as high as you can.

The house needs to be facing north, to avoid direct sunlight,

you don't want to boil the babies alive in the summer.

It needs to be at least 3 meters above ground, or 10 feet.

Minimum hole size:

6cm/2,5in to a maximum of 10cm/4in wide.

Do this when the squirrel is away,

as they can be very protective of their drey and you could get seriously hurt.

Use some single use gloves

and double the layer to avoid putting your scent too much on their stuff.

Now put some of those unshelled nuts in their new home,

as a formal apology for disturbing their home 😊

They'll forgive you 😉

Good luck and if you have any questions,

feel free to reach out to me on any of our social media accounts.
