Building a drey/nest

Building a drey/nest, isn't passed down nor is it learned from their parents.

It's based on instincts, trial and error.

If a young squirrel is very lucky,

they will be able to find an abandoned squirrel drey and tidy it up.

Less fortunate squirrels will have to settle for old birds nests,

by building a dome on top of it or, open holes inside a tree trunk.

Even less unfortunate squirrels, will have to build the whole thing from scratch...

They will have to learn to build one and that can take more than 3 months.

Some, take years to perfect.

They will have to learn to insolate it from the freezing temperatures of winter,

make it wind and water proof from rain.

Even then, the risk of structural failure is still extremely high

as the snow will pack tight and heavily on top of it.

Some squirrels will seek shelter in large bird houses or even human attics.

If you have that problem, visit our website for a guide on how to handling that in: (Relocating Squirrels)
